Automated Conveyor Systems: Different Types & Applications

Date Added: October 19, 2009 07:26:55 PM
Category: "C": Conveyors & Components

Conveyors are devices used in order to transport commodities from one station to another. Adding mechanized and automated processes to such devices conceptualized automated conveyor systems. Now, these systems are present in almost all assembly lines of manufacturing firms.

Automated conveyor systems are created to deviate from the basic functions of the so-called rolling-pin conveyors. Automation is highly necessary for heavier transportations and transmissions. It is also relevant in applications where interaction with automated assembly lines is needed by the firm. Look into the different types and other uses for these conveyor systems.

Automated conveyor system types

There are five types for automated conveyors. One is the pneumatic conveyor or a system that uses a combination of vacuum tubes and compressed air to push the objects into the system. Next is the vibrating conveyor which is designed in order to transport volatile items from one location to another. This system has the capacity to sort out the objects before they are transmitted to the other end.

The belt conveyor is another popular type for automated conveyor systems. This one works with the existence of rubber links and looped metal belts. They are commonly seen in transporting airport luggage. The fourth type is known as the chain conveyor that is said to be functional in the automotive industry. This is termed as such because it consists of a large chain squeezed in between two pulley wheels. Lastly, there is the screw conveyor that is used in order to support agricultural requirements for water. The large screw in the conveyor system allows for material transportation.
Other uses for automated conveyors

Aside from the industries served by the different types of automated conveyors, there are yet other uses for the industrial product. Generally, the automated conveyor simplifies manual work making sure that the needs of the company are met. It actually solves problems on manual transportation of goods. For one, the automated versions are capable of eliminating the daunting tasks of manually transporting one good from one production station to another. They are often found better than other mechanized systems such as forklifts since they are safer and they do not require worker training to operate the conveyor.

However, in order to make automated conveyor systems serve their purposes, they should undergo regular system maintenance. Remember that since they deal with higher production volumes, the wear and tear of the product is inevitable. Maintenance may simply be made by cleaning the conveyor systems or by replacing damaged parts.
